Dropping off my Hamilton for service (the stem decided it was done being a stem), I wandered over to the TAG section and got to paw-up one of these. It was enormous and gorgeous, but that $5K price tag is really steep, considering for about half you can get an Aquaracer or Carrera.

Love these. Don’t care that some people hate them! You can find a B&W on Chrono24 for $2k but its all about that blue IMO.

I think watches are cool but I could never justify paying more than maybe $500 for one (unless I become filthy rich)...that watch costs more than my truck and all it can do is look good and tell me the time...my truck also does both of those AND hauls my fat ass around

I have a Carrera calibre 6 and I love it.I got it as a graduation present and I’ve worn it a decent amount and it’s lovely. That Monaco is lovely looking too, and I bet it has a nice feel to it.

I think I’d have a used Rolex/Breitling/Omega for that kind of cash.
EDIT: I saw Movado and lost my mind... Too early, no caffiene.

You would like old USSR era Russian watches! Way cooler than some tool’s Rolex, nearly infinite variety, tons of history, and all of them are sub $100

Hmmm...sounds interesting, I will definitely take a look

Top 3 “brands” Ilike (all made in a few factories throughout the USSR) Raketa, Luch, Vostok

You *really* don’t want that. I won’t stop. Here are a few from my “archive” where I keep things to look for:
“Luch” watches:
Poljot style watches
Raketa

They’re different enough that I like them.

Oh, but I do. I’m a big fan of vintage! Please, do go on. These are cool!

When I was in high school back in the 90s, I had a watch like this:
I found it at a flea market or antique show after the fall of the wall, paid maybe $50 for it, which was a princely sum to me then. It definitely got attention, and was reasonably accurate. However, it was quartz, and when the battery died after a year or so, I was hosed - couldn’t find a replacement in a small town before mass market internet. I still have it somewhere.

$5k is indeed steep, but it’s a Monaco and they are awesome. I love the blue dial and square case. Yeah you can get an Aquaracer for way cheaper, but the higher end Carreras are not too far off the price of a Monaco. Also, neither of those are a Monaco. I would rather pay more for the watch I really want than pay less for one that looks nice, but isn’t what I really want.

haha ok!
These 24H movements were a staple of the era
Raketas are just the best.
This is a “Capernicus” it’s outrageous and I need one
Epic Perestroika propaganda watches
Nice old Sturmanskie style piece
Definitely the most amusing propaganda watch of them all.
We have covered approximately 1/4 of the Russian section of my archive. I really should start doing full on Oppo writeups.

Many premium watches are like premium cars - smart money buys pre-owned (from a reputable seller). I have an IWC and a Tudor, both bought pre-owned at no more than 50% original MSRP.

I think you should! I would star that.

No reason to buy a new one of these. I’m sure there are plenty of people who got and regretted it later. Looks like you can pick one up for <$3k.
watchrecon.com is a great search engine for used watches.

If you’re going to spend that kind of money on a watch, at least buy something that might hold its value (or, as suggested below, buy used). Watch snobs consider Tag to be worthless mass-market junk.
If I wore a watch, I’d wear a Swatch or a Casio.

They are excellent in every aspect except keeping time.

They are pretty cool looking, and in my mind will always be associated with Breaking Bad.
Saw a REALLY cool watch for sale come up recently, pre-owned. Rolex Sub with the ghosted bezel......then I saw the price tag. $12k! Super nice, but not sure about that price.

Any recommendations on legitimate places to browse pre-owned high end watches? After grad school I started getting in to watches, but now being more responsible and having a house, family etc. can’t really justify spending 10x as much money as a watch that looks and works perfectly fine from a “lesser” brand.

Same here. If you like vintage, check estate sales. If you like modern, check used. I bought my Glycine, my Breitling, and 2 Omegas that way.

try chrono24, WatchUSeek sales forums, and TimeZone forums.
Big word of caution: check seller rep first before you commit. If you live in the US, stick to CONUS sellers. Always use Paypal goods instead of personal (so you can claw your money back if the watch never arrive).

Average user recommended good places. Legit dealers also often use ebay, and you can link to their sites via that.
I bought one watch from these guys, easy transaction, and price was negotiable:
